Most sparkplugs are preset to around 0.75mm - 0.8mm, if your spark plug part number has no trailing digits then the chances are it will be preset to this specification. If there are trailing numbers then the gap will have been specifically set as per the manufacturer's part code designation (e.g. NGK BKR6E-11, gap size is 1.1mm, Denso T16EPR-U15, gap size is 1.5mm, Champion RC10YC4, gap size is 1.0mm). Part numbering for NGK and Denso is reasonably logical with the trailing digits transposing directly into size in mm. For Champion it is a little less logical and is as listed below:
4 = 1.0mm (e.g. RC10YC4)
5 = 1.3mm (e.g. RN16YC5)
6 = 1.5mm (e.g. RS14YC6)
If the recommended sparkplug for your vehicle is listed as 'preset' or 'X' then no adjustment should be necessary unless the plug gap is accidentally adjusted in some way (e.g. dropped). Our application guides list suitable plugs and the suggested gap setting for your UK spec vehicle.
The table below lists equivalent metric (mm) and Imperial (Inches, usually quoted as thousandths of an inch or 'thou') gap settings.
